Tracker 1&2 Control Center Wind Turbine Studio Roof Home Solar Hot Water Step 1.) The first step in converting a home to SOLAR/HYBRID power should be performed by everyone to eliminate wasteful energy consumption. Convert to compact florescent bulbs and add low wattage florescent lighting in high use areas. Find phantom loads and install plug strips to turn off electric drain when not in use. Add high quality insulation to the roof and walls. We added 4.5 inches of polystyrene to our roof and new light colored steel. The difference in heating and cooling was amazing afterwards.
We are replacing the electric cook top and electric oven with a high efficiency propane range. We have propane for our back up generator, so no extra tanks are needed. We changed the old five gallon flush toilets,(2), with 1.6 gallon flush toilets. When we built Earthbilly house our water system was outfitted with a 500 gallon stainless steel pressure tank. This will work well with our 1 hp AC submersible pump @ 10 gallon per minute connected to the hybrid power plant. Power surge is already minimized and the pump runs once a day for the water needs of two people. The only addition may be a timer to make the pump operate during daylight only. Future changes may be a water tank with 150' head, to have natural gravity pressure, and a separate solar panel power system for water pumping only. We needed a new washer anyway so we got a Stabler high efficiency washer. We turned off the large freezer and converted into a grain and bean storage box and replaced it with a new Energy Star freezer. We will try to keep our full size refrigerator. It seems to be quite efficient after plugging it into our KILL-A-WATT Meter. The Kill A Watt meter is a fantastic tool for finding efficient appliances, fans, and any phantom loads around the house. Convert air conditioning and heating system to a Pond Source Geo-Thermal heat pump with Inter Super Cooler and back up the domestic hot water heating with two solar hydronic panels to supplement The Inter Super Cooler during mild weather. Don't over size the heat pump. We want it to run longer for domestic hot water production and to dehumidify more efficiently. !!UPDATE!! 6/24/08...Split off one 20 amp circuit from the grid to our one air conditioner for the 08 summer. Everything else is running from RE power. This is cheaper than $10,000 in more panels needed to run the air properly. We will upgrade power soon. The system can easily handle it. Our WoodMizer 15 hp single phase electric sawmill is already the most productive energy efficient personal sawmill on the planet. We use only 200-300 KWh per month to generate $4000.00+ monthly income. 4/12/08 We finally hooked up our propane high efficiency stove and turned off the electric cook top and oven. Currently working on the solar hydronic domestic hot water system. 6/22/08 The Solar hydronic domestic hot water system is fully functional, automatic and making plenty of hot water.
